FutureEverything - 2014
FutureEverything is an award-winning innovation lab for digital culture and an annual festival, established in Manchester in 1995. The organisation’s broad output spans research and development projects, original arts commissioning, digital education and advocacy, and in 2013 we were invited to reimagine how this diverse and multifaceted focus could be best represented online.
Through much conversation with the team and thorough revision of FutureEverything’s rich history, we identified that this very archive of groundbreaking projects and critically the working relationships therein should be brought to the fore. We devised an abstracted structure where People – artists, speakers, influencers – could be associated with Events – festivals, projects, commissions – across a timeline which extends back to the organisation’s genesis and projects forward as far as is necessary. In this manner it becomes possible to track an individual’s affiliation and contribution, a relationship which can be as fluid as the key themes the festival tackles or as rigid as a practitioners creative focus permits.
Key challenges included designing and building a fully responsive visual calendar which accurately communicated the intricacy of a multi-site festival and conference programme, creating administrational ‘wrapper’ options to structure simultaneous programmes of events or festivals operating cross-continentally, and ensuring provision for media-rich documentation of events.
We’re delighted to continue developing the capability and scope of the core website with FutureEverything, alongside a complement of identity, print and web projects including the annual festivals, ArtsAPI, Global FUTR Network / Labs and the British Council supported New Playgrounds publication.
